Turkey is a genetically important place for flowers. The ice age did not reach this far south so many more species were able to survive. It is estimated that there are about 9,000 species of flowers in Turkey. The physical geography means that many areas are physically isolated. There is, therefore, a high number of endemic species (Approx. 30%) that only occur in Turkey.
